Martha Crosby Frisbie (Mrs. Rev. A. L.)

Martha Frisbie was a Des Moines Women’s Club member from 1888-1901 and again from 1919-1930. She was the wife of the well known Reverend A. L. Frisbie of Plymouth Congregational Church. Both the Reverend and Mrs. Frisbie were active in the Iowa Women’s suffrage movement and were outspoken abolitionists before the Civil War.

During her years as a member of Des Moines Women’s Club she delivered papers on religion and literature. Dr. Martha Frisbie was a teacher in private schools ever since her graduation from Mt. Holyoke female seminary. Mrs. Frisbie had a trained mind and experience in teaching. (Des Moines Register 2 January 1901, p29. ) Before she married, she taught at Callanan College in Des Moines. She was a beloved Sunday School teacher at Plymouth for 35 years.

A Des Moines women’s group which was formed from her Sunday school “graduates” sill bears her name today.
